2K Hires Apex Legends Producer to Rescue Challenged Action Game Project Ethos
2K Games has welcomed a seasoned producer from Respawn Entertainment to direct the studio crew at their internal studio, which is currently developing the forthcoming over-the-shoulder action-packed title known as this innovative game.
Leadership Shift Follows Mixed Response
The new appointee assumes the leadership position at the development studio following the dismissal of former leader Michael Condrey, who was reportedly let go due to Project Ethos' lackluster initial reveal last fall.
Recently, the company's top executive David Ismailer updated team members about this strategic move through an official communication, which stressed that early feedback sessions had shown the need for a more defined vision.
The president expressed that the team is now reimagining Project Ethos with a revised approach, aiming to satisfy player expectations.
A Pattern of Key Acquisitions
The news follows a comparable action taken by the publisher in the summer, when they recruited Rod Fergusson from the Diablo team to work on the BioShock studio Cloud Chamber.
Here is the full message from Ismailer's announcement:
Hello Everyone—
I understand you all just completed your meeting - I trust you’re as excited as I am with the recent updates. Last time I sent you all a message, I mentioned the following: “I am confident in this crew. You all are some of the most driven and creative designers we have had the pleasure to partner with - and we’re looking forward for that partnership to endure.”
Given your hard work and adaptability, particularly over the past twelve months, you continue to prove that.
The community feedback from last autumn’s Project ETHOS testing phase was revealing. It confirmed the promise of a roguelike shooter but indicated we still had improvements to make. It uncovered the need for a clearer vision.
It has been motivating to see how far you’ve progressed. You accepted the criticism to heart and overhauled Project ETHOS with a revitalized goal - one that’s positioned to fulfill its ambition to our fans.
The trust in this project increases every day. To advance the remarkable progress you’ve made, I’m excited to introduce the new hire as the incoming Lead of the team. After some time of talks, he comes aboard us on next week.
Ben’s leadership and background in the competitive gaming field is considerable, having devoted the past decade and a half creating and managing some of the most popular franchises in gaming, such as Call of Duty: Black Ops, and most recently, the battle royale hit.
Please join me in greeting Ben in the coming days. We are all eager to continue seeing the development of Project ETHOS in the weeks to ahead.
David
Background of the Incoming Head
Brinkman currently serves in the role of executive producer and production lead at the renowned studio for their flagship title. Brinkman previously worked at Treyarch and Activision in diverse development positions on the Call of Duty series, and, prior to that, had periods at 2K and Electronic Arts.
Title Information and Vision
The upcoming game was revealed in last year alongside a community playtest. Initially, the developers described the title as a "no-cost, 3rd-person roguelike hero shooter and an exciting evolution on the style."
"Build your perfect run—or die trying—in this 3rd-person action shooter! Customize your character in live gameplay to fit your unique tactics," the official summary states. "Take on the opponents with fresh skills, risks, and challenges that change every match. Will you leave securely with your collected items? Or take a risk, gamble everything, and pray your team can earn top ranking? The option is yours."
Project Ethos does not have an announced launch window or platforms, but players can anticipate additional details as creation advances.
