He has performed deeds ten thousand times worse – the current estimate of casualties from his cuts to foreign assistance is 600,000 and increasing, and this week a study predicted his fossil fuel policies would cause deaths an additional 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have attempted – really, no previous leader would have conceived – solo demolishing significant portions of the presidential residence to build a Versailles-style party room, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom maintain dealings with federal agencies.

As bewildering as it is to observe the chief executive seek to颠覆 the traditional concept of democracy and replace it with its polar opposite, there remains a substantial portion of Americans who should not find it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics a near majority – who were brought up within mainstream Protestant traditions.
We have observed across decades as rightwing evangelical churches transformed the Christ we grew up with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. At its most basic, they turned a figure of affection into a symbol of animosity who endorses exactly the harshness that he denounced in biblical teachings; this has happened at a slower pace, across decades rather than months, but it is nonetheless unsettling via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for numerous individuals.
A Toxic Christianity Establishes Itself

The apparent and direct reality that Christ of the gospels calls for a type of profound affection concentrated on the impoverished has consistently rendered Christian religion rather a provocative belief system: attractive to the general public, but owing to its intrinsic extremism requiring to be controlled. During the 1950s it was contained through watering down – Protestantism was so widespread that it essentially baptized the status quo.
A Struggle for the Highest Within Us
Hence I have become encouraged to observe the persistent defiance regarding Trump develop over the last twelve months.
